Straight razor, hot towel

The hot shave

About 40 minutes, six steps, one barber from start to finish.

A hot shave is for anyone who wants a close shave of the face or the neck, or the edges of a beard cut with a razor instead of a trimmer. It starts with a talk and ends with a cool towel, and your barber tells you what is coming at each step.

Clients come back every two to four weeks, and some book one before an event.

  • Face, neck or head

  • About 40 minutes; a first shave is set aside 50

  • Booked ahead; no deposit is taken

Step by step

What each step is for

  1. 01
    5 min

    Step 1: The talk

Where the growth runs, how your skin feels, how you shave at home.

    • Say how often you shave and with what

    • Mention anything that feels tender today

    • Say if you want the neckline or the head shaved too

  2. 02
    5 min

    Step 2: Hot towel

Heat and steam soften the whiskers before any blade touches the skin.

    • Wrung out in hot water

    • Left on until it stops steaming

    • Tell us if it is too hot

  3. 03
    5 min

    Step 3: Oil and lather

A cushion for the razor, worked in with a brush.

    • A little oil first

    • Lather brushed in against the grain, then smoothed

    • A second layer before the second pass

  4. 04
    10 min

    Step 4: First pass

The razor with the grain, in short strokes.

    • Cheeks first, then the neck

    • Skin held taut with the free hand

    • A new blade, put in at the chair

  5. 05
    8 min

    Step 5: Second pass

A closer pass, across the grain.

    • Only where your skin takes it

    • Lather again, then the razor

    • Say stop at any point

  6. 06
    5 min

Step 6: Cool towel and balm

    The finish.

    • A cool towel over the face

    • A balm worked in

    • A last look before you stand up

Your first shave

A first shave takes a little longer, about 50 minutes.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Book your visit

Book First shave on the booking page or call the shop, so we set aside the extra time. Tell us if you have never used a straight razor.

  2. 02

    Step 2: What to bring

Only a few days of growth, if you can.

    • A few days of growth

    • A photo of a beard shape you like, if you want one shaped too

  3. 03

    Step 3: When you arrive

Come five minutes early. There is parking in the lot behind the shop, and the door by the board is the way in.

  4. 04

    Step 4: What to expect

The six steps, a little slower than a regular shave. You can say stop at any point, and nothing is added without your yes.

Who shaves

Alton leads the shave chair. Roosevelt takes beard shaping and the neck work.

Questions about the shave

What should I do before my shave?

Arrive with a few days of growth if you can, and skip shaving that morning. If your skin feels tender or sunburned, tell your barber and we will change the shave or move it.

Can I have my head shaved?

Yes. A head shave is booked as its own service, 45 minutes, with the same hot towel, lather and razor.

Is there a minimum age?

The razor shave is for ages 16 and up. Younger clients are welcome for cuts, with a parent in the shop.

What if I want to stop?

Say so at any point. Your barber puts the razor down, and we finish the visit the way you want.

Ready for the towel?

Book a hot shave, or a first shave if the razor is new to you.
