Beard shaping

A beard, shaped

The cheek line, the neckline and a length that suits how it grows.

Beard shaping is a razor on the edges and scissors and comb on the length. Your barber looks at where the beard grows thick and where it thins, suggests a shape, and shows you the line before it is cut.

Beard trims between visits are quick and take walk-ins when a chair is open.

  • Beard shaping: 30 minutes, consultation first

  • Beard trim: 15 minutes, walk-ins welcome

  • Line-up and neck shave: 20 minutes

Six shapes

Which shape suits your beard

  • Full and natural

Let it grow, keep it tidy: the cheek line and neckline cleaned up and the length evened out. Suits thick, even growth.

    • Every 3 to 4 weeks

    • Razor on the cheek line and the neckline

    • A balm at home keeps it sitting down

    • Ask for: shaped, not shortened.

  • Short boxed

A short, even length with sharp edges at the cheek and the neck. Suits most growth and most workplaces.

    • Every 2 to 3 weeks

    • Clippers for the length, razor for the edges

    • Easy to keep between visits

    • Ask for: a boxed beard, one guard.

  • Stubble

A close clipper length kept the same all over, with a clean neckline. Suits growth that comes in slowly or patchy.

    • Every 2 weeks

    • One guard all over

    • A neckline cut with the razor

    • Ask for: stubble, and say which guard.

  • Goatee and mustache

A mustache with a chin beard, the cheeks shaved clean. Suits growth that comes in thickest at the chin.

    • Every 2 to 3 weeks

    • Scissors on the mustache

    • Cheeks shaved with a hot towel

    • Ask for: the cheeks clean and the mustache kept.

  • Clean cheek line

A full chin and jaw with a razor-sharp cheek line. Suits growth that thins on the cheeks.

    • Every 2 to 3 weeks

    • The cheek line drawn with the razor

    • We show you the line before we cut it

    • Ask for: a high cheek line, or a natural one.

  • Long and shaped

Length kept on the chin, trimmed with scissors and comb so it falls cleanly. Suits a beard that has had time.

    • Every 4 to 6 weeks

    • Scissors and comb, not clippers

    • Oil at home keeps it soft

    • Ask for: length kept, shape cleaned.

Questions about beards

How long should my beard be before I come in?

Long enough for the shape to show: a few weeks of growth is plenty. Tell us what you are growing toward and your barber will plan the shaping around it.

How do I ask for a shape?

Bring a photo or use the names in the guide. Say the length you want and where you want the cheek line, and your barber will show you before cutting.

Can you shape a patchy beard?

Yes. We shape around where it grows, and we will say plainly what a shape can and cannot do with your growth.

Do you use clippers or scissors?

Both. Clippers for short even lengths, scissors and comb for longer beards, and the razor for the edges.
